Howdy Neighbors,
Based on comments from many of our neighbors over the past several years, I know that tax relief is a priority for our community. Led by myself and Councilman Courage (District 9) we will once again call for a Special Council Meeting at tomorrow's budget goal-setting session to begin the process of notifying the State of our desire to increase our City’s Homestead Tax Exemption. This action would keep us in line with other cities in Texas which have taken steps to increase their Homestead Tax Exemptions. Councilman Courage and I authored and passed the initial Homestead Tax Exemption back in 2019. Since then, it has saved San Antonio homeowners over $12 million and counting. This initial step was an historic move as San Antonio was one of the only major Texas cities without a Homestead Tax Exemption, but we can and must do more to help our homeowners.
I am committed to working with the other taxing entities such as school districts, Bexar County, SARA, the hospital district, etc., as well as with the State Legislature to get as much property tax relief as possible for our neighbors. The City’s Homestead Tax Exemption is just one tool that we can use to help, and we’d like to take the next step in the process to increase the amount of tax relief in San Antonio. Our goal is to enhance the current $5,000 exemption to 5% of the value of your home. This is a necessary move as we all continue to see rising property values and increases in fees without any relief.
For seniors over 65, your City tax bill is frozen. This expansion is tax relief for working family homeowners under the age of 65. This was always the next step in the plan of incremental tax relief when we created the Homestead Tax Exemption in 2019. If you support this idea, please contact the other members of Council and the Mayor and let them know!
As always, thank you for being active community members and leaders here in District 10. Please do not hesitate to contact our office if we can be of any assistance to you. The District 10 team is still on hand and available to address your needs and concerns throughout this time.
